    it's quite simple: the alphabet has 5 letters for the vowels, Chinese, like most Asian languages, has 30 or more vowels. These cannot therefore be represented in Pinyin. Alphabetic languages are made up of sounds, the logographic script is visual where a character contains much more and also different information than a sound word. For example, the logographic script does not make use of the sound possibilities, so those few tones really mean nothing and have an exclusively vocabulary meaning. When the language is spoken quickly, as usual, those tones are rarely pronounced correctly because they are of secondary importance. They did got a lot of attention because when foreigners wanted to know why a language as Chinese is difficult, it was to difficult to explain, so they said 'because of the tones!" And now everybody is telling those tones makes it difficult, tyhat English has many more tones and they can be used for vor vocabulairy as wel as for emotional expressions. Pinyin is yet another attempt to simplify a very interesting and rich script so that Western people can also read it. It's just a cultural loss and it shouldn't be promoted. And yes, there are many characters, but just like words, they are made up of fixed lines and there are not that many of them at all and they are also written in a fixed order and not like the Latin script where everything is done by are used together. On balance, the logographic script is simpler, more efficient and more beautiful. But for people who think they represent the real culture... yes, they prefer to use the simple but incomplete script using the letters they know. Later I will also learn logographic script, but I haven't gotten around to it yet because I grew up in a country where words are made using sound. And that is very different, much simpler.

    2:46 "Chinese characters are not words" In fact, many Chinese characters are words, such as "人、手、足;日,月,水、火”, etc.

    I would rather believe (my own amateur theory) xi is a corruption of the sound shi 事 which came to Japan with the meaning of things, matters, business. The silk road was bringing many things from the east to the west. So maybe at some point in time 东事 was being used for business affairs from the east as the main flow os spices and unique products would be from east to west, while currencies, silver and gold would be brought back.

    You speak so fast that a second language learner would find it really hard to encapsulate the whole pronunciation of the last foreign word...dude you gotta slow down on the foreign vocab you want your learners to learn...

      Hey there , We appreciate the feedback and we'll make a note of this . However for slower content , checl our long form videos on RUclips or check out our courses. RUclips shorts are tricky, the 60 second limit sometimes results in us to try to pack too much in , but on the course, we can take our time and are methodical.

    You're great at making mandarin sound easy for learners. I found your videos a few months ago about pronunciation of tones, but i was far too new at the language to soak it in. My girlfriend is from Taiwan and i've gone through the effort to learn Zhuyin on my phone and all the sounds feel much more natural to me now. I wish there was more content to learn mandarin with the zhuyin system, but i understand traditional mandarin is far less used. I'm glad i get to learn pinyin from this awesome content though! I'll just have to learn mandarin with my partner saying "we use this word instead" haha. It's funny how different it can be sometimes

    居然刪除了我的留言。看來這個地方容不下批評的聲音。當然站在老外的視角學中文也是一種方法。不過亂說就是不對的,畢竟中文是一個古老而有智慧的語言,從字的產生至演變過程就可以看出這一點,如果不從根本去學中文,你永遠學的只是皮毛。再見。

    I am a Singaporean Chinese, and began learning Chinese characters with teachers giving us characters to write as homework. Each week we are given a few characters to ensure we get it on our heads. By the time after 15/16 years in school, we have mastered most of it. It's as good as rote learning and after awhile, you will remember. Yes, it's a tonal language, some same characters have different meanings but not to worry, by and large if you speak with a Chinese , they will understand. Pronunciation takes time. Enjoy!

  • @1doutlaw
    @1doutlaw 2 дня назад

    It seems there are some characters that sound the same but mean different things based on the context of the sentence . Then there are characters that have multiple meanings but are different tones . On top of that the phonics of the pinyin do not match English phonics so further challenges on top of remembering them you still have these things to consider, I am on day 200 streak of duolingo the free version. I am sure your course is better but I can not afford any subscriptions because I am on a fixed budget so my ethics are that if I can not pay you then I feel it’s not fair to you. I do enjoy your free videos and think you do have some very good strategies to learn as I do have a background in training in my industry and used a lot of the techniques you suggest . But there are more cognitive science findings every day that are very interesting and do help that I have not been able to use yet .
